Frequently Asked Questions
If you have a question that is not answered here, please do not hesitate to give me a call at (204) 284-0835, or email me at erica@soul-haven.ca.
Do you direct bill your massage treatments?
Yes! Direct billing is available to Great West Life and Manitoba Blue Cross Insurance Companies.
If your plan does not cover you 100%, you will be required to pay the balance at the time of
your treatment. It will be your responsibility to obtain a doctors referral if required prior
to your treatment. Plan/Contract #'s are required at the time of booking.
Do I have to take off all of my clothing for a massage?
No. It is best you remove all of your street clothing, such as top, bottom, and socks. It is
recommended that bras be removed as well. Lower underwear should be left on for hygienic
reasons and personal preference. The therapist is trained in proper draping methods, requiring
each client to be covered at all times during the treatment. Only areas being worked on will
be exposed. Preference of having no draping at all is NOT an option.
Can I talk during my massage treatment?
You may talk as much or as little as you like. However, it is recommended that you keep talking
to a minimum during a treatment, to allow your entire body and its muscles to relax during
the massage.
Is the massage treatment supposed to hurt?
Receiving deep tissue massage can get uncomfortable at times when the therapist is working out
muscular imbalances. But the discomfort level should never turn into pain. One good rule of
thumb is that if you can breathe through the therapist’s technique smoothly, then the pressure
is still within your threshold. Each therapist is well trained in monitoring pressure and pain
levels of an individual, however please keep in mind that each individual has a different pain
threshold and sometimes it is difficult for the therapist to differentiate without feedback
from the client.
Will I bruise after a deep tissue massage?
You should never see a visible bruise after a treatment. It is normal to feel a little bruised
or tender in some areas the morning after your treatment. If you see an actual bruise, that
may be an indication that your therapist went too deep.
Why do I have to drink lots of water after a massage?
Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink
plenty of water following your massage to flush the toxins out of your system.
How often do I need a massage?
It varies for each individual. Factors such as your daily activities, occupation, medical
conditions, or any chronic/acute injuries, can all effect how often you should be visiting
your therapist. Some clients only need to come in once or twice a year, while others need a
monthly appointment. Massage has its greatest benefits over time. The therapeutic effects of
massage are cumulative, so the more often a person gets a massage, the better one will feel
and the more quickly one’s body will respond.
Why don’t you do massages in the first trimester?
Massage therapy is not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy simply for precautionary
measures. Your body is in a very fragile state in the first 3 months of pregnancy, and massage
therapy affects many of the body’s systems. Majority of massage therapists opt not to perform
massage in the first trimester.
Are all massages the same?
Definitely not. Although each professional is trained with the general and advanced techniques
during schooling, everyone finds the best techniques that work for them and their clients
based on experience. Every therapist will have different ways of assessing your body, be it
by passive ranges of motion, or by strictly palpation. It is always a good idea to try out a
couple of different therapists before committing to one person. One therapist may not seem to
help you at all, but don’t let that dampen your opinion on massage. Your next treatment may be
just what you were hoping for!
